Do I need a network?

First of all... do you have broadband internet?  If your answer to that is "no" then you are overpaying for dial up.  Sure you can get a dial up connection for $11.00/month, but why not spend the extra $10.00/month for at least DSL.  The difference in speed is staggering, and you'll be able to quickly download movies, music, games or simply surf the net more efficiently!

You typically do NOT need a network if you only have one computer and nothing else in your home or business that requires internet or file sharing.

If you have more than one computer or device in your home, like a game console, and you'd like to share your internet connection and files, then you definitely require a network.

Should my network be wired or wireless?

Most homes and businesses today are pre-wired with networking cable.  If this is the case then we recommend you stick with wired unless you'd like to be mobile and enjoy some sunlight outside while speaking with your colleges or family across the country on your lap top computer.  You can have the best of both worlds for very little cost.

Many older homes are not network ready, so they should go with a fully wireless network.  It is very simple to set up.  Each computer in your home must have wireless capabilities.  Most laptop computers already do, but if you need adaptors for each computer, then do not worry!  Wireless technology is now very inexpensive and accessible to the average consumer.  A business with 5 or more devices (computers/faxes/printers) should invest in having their building wired with network cable, simply to avoid headaches in the future.

Can you give me an idea of how much this will cost me?

Prices range depending on the scope and complexity of the situation.  In general residential networks are simple and easy to implement, which makes it very inexpensive.

Here is a common networking scenario in a residential home:

  • Home not pre-wired or network ready

  • 2 Computers - (1 Laptop/1 Desktop)

  • 2 Game Consoles - (XBox 360/Nintendo Wii)

The broadband internet modem is connected near the desktop computer and has a network cord connecting it directly to the modem.  The laptop computer does not have wireless built in capabilities.

Solution:  Client wants to be able to share one internet line between the computers and game consoles, so a wireless router is installed between the modem and desktop computer and the laptop is fitted with a wireless adaptor.  The computers are then configured to share information and files.  Next if the XBox 360 is too far away from the desktop computer, then it will be fitted with a wireless adaptor too.  The Nintendo Wii has built in wireless capabilities, so that is ready.  Last step is to configure the game consoles to the wireless router and all is set.  Your entire home is now a wireless hotspot!  You can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air with your lap top and surf the net while watching the kids play.  You can share your internet connection between all 4 devices and share files on your computers.  It is even possible to connect your XBox 360 to your computers if they have Windows Media Center or Vista.

Dylesko Technology Company charges $80.00 + the ACTUAL cost of any hardware needed to make it work for this common set up.

In this scenario the client had to purchase the following hardware:

  • 1 Wireless router (~ $65.00)

  • 1 Wireless PCMCIA laptop adaptor (~$50)

  • 1 Wireless USB 360 adaptor (~$50)

Approximate Total Cost:  $245.00
